Why I Want to Sail Around the World

In 1997, I nearly died from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. I was placed in a medically induced coma for 2 months. That experience changed everything. It made me rethink how I wanted to spend my time—what really mattered. Not long after I recovered, I bought Song.

Sailing gives me a sense of freedom and focus. Since 2000, I’ve explored the East Coast, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. Each trip reminded me how short life is and how much of the world I still want to see—on my own terms.

Sailing around the world isn’t about proving anything. It’s about pushing beyond what’s familiar. I want to experience new oceans, new cultures, and new challenges. I know it won’t be easy—there will be rough weather, mechanical issues, and long stretches of isolation—but I’ve learned how to handle uncertainty. I’ve done it before.

There’s also something appealing about the structure of a circumnavigation. It gives purpose to the miles, a bigger arc to follow. I know it won’t all be beautiful sunsets and calm seas. There will be hard days, tough decisions, and moments where I’ll question why I ever started. But I also know I’ll grow from those experiences.
